REGIONAL CONNECTIVITY, CITIZEN EMPOWERMENT
We live in an increasingly globalized world where society’s needs are rapidly evolving; however, a myriad of socio-economic grievances gripping nations across continents remain acute and unaddressed. Eisenhower Fellowships (EF) stands at a unique position to foster cross-national relations that can serve humanity by influencing decision makers throughout the world to make wise and lucrative decisions to overcome the problems that thwart development.
On the 26th and 27th of February 2017, Eisenhower Fellows from South Asia will host the South Asia Rising 2017 conference in light of critical issues suffered by the region. The conference is the third of its kind, with the first two conferences on the region previously held in Colombo, Sri Lanka, in 2006 and 2012.
The creation of dialogue that can promote integration across borders is one of the first steps towards achievable and sustainable development. The South Asia Rising 2017 conference will focus on two primary themes: Regional Connectivity and Citizen Empowerment, allocated on the two days respectively. Under these overarching themes, each day of the conference will further discuss sub-topics, which will provide the foundations for creating discussion that will hopefully drive the changes that are required to curtail barriers currently faced by the region. These will include, but are not limited to the following:
Ultimately through the South Asia Rising 2017 conference, we hope to enable EF Fellows and regional stakeholders to exchange views and ideas through increased collaboration. Furthermore, we see this conference as an ideal opportunity to integrate new Fellows into EF’s global network, and to eventually create a cross-national dialogue between policy makers and influential leaders to help solve issues that remain prevalent in the region.
In 2013, China’s President Xi Jinping pushed the strategic framework of building the “Silk Road Economic Belt” and the “21st Century Maritime Silk Road”, collectively titled the “One Belt, One Road” (OBOR) initiative; a promising economic corridor founded on the basis of mutual trust, equality, and cooperation.
The African Union and China signed an MoU in 2015 for a continent-wide agreement based on infrastructure development, which is imperative for industrialization in the continent. This MoU is a marked shift in collaboration that can help Africa achieve its economic potential.
India retains the title of being the world’s fastest growing big economy. In 2015-16, it jumped 16 ranks, currently 55th on the World Economic Forum’s Global Competitiveness Index. India’s growth serves as a model for all developing economies to emulate.
Regional cooperation is an integral component of solving energy crises. Energy security is, therefore, a matter of concern that requires a joint effort in the South Asian region.
Technological changes are creating a metamorphosis in behavioural patterns. Emerging economies must learn to adapt to these changes in an efficient manner to prevent cataclysm.
With dramatically altering demographics that hugely impact the global landscape, the policy challenge that we currently face is how to actively use regional connectivity to foster global development.
We live in an increasingly globalized world, where society’s needs are rapidly evolving; governance systems, however, are unable to keep up. Resultantly, socio-economic grievances remain unaddressed and acute.
The world faces a looming threat of terrorism and extremism, which has detrimental and grave effects on a multitude of factors. Regional cooperation is essential to tackle such challenges on a political, economic and social level.
