SOUTH ASIA RISING: CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES

REGIONAL CONNECTIVITY, CITIZEN EMPOWERMENT

We live in an increasingly globalized world where society’s needs are rapidly evolving; however, a myriad of socio-economic grievances gripping nations across continents remain acute and unaddressed. Eisenhower Fellowships (EF) stands at a unique position to foster cross-national relations that can serve humanity by influencing decision makers throughout the world to make wise and lucrative decisions to overcome the problems that thwart development.

On the 26th and 27th of February 2017, Eisenhower Fellows from South Asia will host the South Asia Rising 2017 conference in light of critical issues suffered by the region. The conference is the third of its kind, with the first two conferences on the region previously held in Colombo, Sri Lanka, in 2006 and 2012.

The creation of dialogue that can promote integration across borders is one of the first steps towards achievable and sustainable development. The South Asia Rising 2017 conference will focus on two primary themes: Regional Connectivity and Citizen Empowerment, allocated on the two days respectively. Under these overarching themes, each day of the conference will further discuss sub-topics, which will provide the foundations for creating discussion that will hopefully drive the changes that are required to curtail barriers currently faced by the region. These will include, but are not limited to the following:

  • The energy crisis and the ability to increase regional prosperity through shared resources across national boundaries;
  • The role of China’s One Belt, One Road initiative in galvanizing regional connectivity;
  • The impact of technology and digitalization in Asia in stimulating innovation to fuel sustainable growth;
  • The need for regional connectivity to help youth in developing economies tackle problems which must be eradicated to promote regional stability, including extremism and marginalization.

Ultimately through the South Asia Rising 2017 conference, we hope to enable EF Fellows and regional stakeholders to exchange views and ideas through increased collaboration. Furthermore, we see this conference as an ideal opportunity to integrate new Fellows into EF’s global network, and to eventually create a cross-national dialogue between policy makers and influential leaders to help solve issues that remain prevalent in the region.
